Apriva receives major DOD approval
April 28, 2008 · By Ty Young
Apriva, a Scottsdale high-security wireless solutions provider, has received authority to operate the multi carrier entry point for the next generation of handsets used by the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRNet). This sets the company up for future U.S. Department of Defense communications contacts, all of which are migrating to SIPRNet for long-haul transmission.
The Defense Information Systems Agency announced the approval on April 24, setting Apriva up for potential licensing of the company’s Multi Protocol Gateway (MPG) infrastructure. The system routes traffic amongst domains and enclaves without storing messages like a typical network operation center (NOC). The MPG system also does not mingle authorized user traffic with unauthorized communications, thus keeping the ultimate security necessary for Defense Department communications.
Apriva’s MPG system has been approved for classified and unclassified date routing. In conjunction with SIPRNet, which is often chosen ahead of secure voice connections, Apriva will be at the forefront of warfighting data communications. The Apriva system will be deployed on the secure mobile environment portable electronic device (SME PED) project, which includes a device from Scottsdale-based General Dynamics C4 Systems Sectera Edge device. The other SME PED device that could use the Apriva system is L-3 Communications‘ Guardian. L3 has operations in Sierra Vista, Ariz.
The SME PEDs will also use Apriva’s Sensa email application, which has been approved for classified and unclassified users.
“Apriva’s ability to license PMPG infrastructure changes the paradigm available to security conscious enterprises looking to leverage PKI-based authentication solutions. A PMPG from Apriva enables the enterprise to control their own destiny; the enterprise determines who rides on the network and the amount of redundancy, load distribution, and failover associated with its management,” said Chris Spinella, CEO of Apriva.
Apriva has become one of the country’s most prominent wireless solutions provider for hardware, software and network infrastructures that use point of sale and secure mobile messaging.
