Mesa housing program receives state honor
The City of Mesa’s Homeowner’s Rehabilitation Project has been named the outstanding CDBG project by the state of Arizona for fiscal year 2005- 2006. Mesa Housing Supervisor Chris DeCaluwe accepted the award on behalf of the city at a statewide celebration today in Glendale. Mesa’s Homeowner’s Rehabilitation Project is one of ten projects and programs honored at this year’s event as part of National Community Development Week.
Administered by the City of Mesa’s Housing Services Division, this program has a two-fold purpose. One is to assist low and moderate-income homeowners to address the livability of their residences by providing major repairs. The other is to lend stability to the housing stock in the City’s older neighborhoods.
A total of $2,619,887 was used in fiscal year 2005-2006 to fund the rehabilitation of 35 single-family homes and 105 emergency repairs to single-family homes. As one of the recipients said in a thank you letter to Housing Services, “We love our new home. We are so very grateful to you and your program. I feel so humbled by this blessing. Thanks to the City of Mesa!”
Mesa’s Homeowner’s Rehabilitation Project receives all of its funding from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), a federal program designed to provide decent, safe and sanitary housing; a suitable living environment; and economic opportunities to low and moderate-income people.
